Key Laboratory of Geotechnical Mechanics and Engineering of the Ministry of Water Resources(hereinafter called the Laboratory) is a comprehensive research department with an entity running mode in the area of geotechnical mechanics and engineering. It was founded in 2004 by uniting three research departments, which are the rock foundation research department, the soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering research department, and the blasting and vibration research department of Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute(CRSRI) of the Changjiang Water Resource Commission.
At present, the Laboratory has a director, deputy director, chief engineer, deputy chief engineer, comprehensive office, and 10 research disciplines, including rock mechanics testing and engineering rock mass characteristics, geostress theory and testing technology, numerical methods and engineering rock mass stability, engineering geophysical technology, geotechnical disaster prevention and information technology, soil engineering characteristics, foundation and foundation treatment technology, groundwater resources and seepage, environmental geotechnical and ecological restoration technology, blasting technology and safety protection.
Supported by the relevant majors of the Key Laboratory of Geotechnical Engineering, the Institute of Science and Technology of China is the legal entity. It is a co built unit of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering (first level society), a affiliated unit of domestic societies such as the Testing Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering (second level society), the Hubei Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering (local legal entity society organization), the Blasting Professional Committee of the Chinese Water Resources Society (second level society), and the Geotechnical Engineering Physics Simulation Technology Subcommittee of the Geotechnical Mechanics Professional Committee of the Chinese Water Resources Society.
The Laboratory has an office area of 1154m2 and a laboratory area of 3109m2, including: rock physics and mechanics laboratory, geotechnical physics and mechanics laboratory, coarse-grained material laboratory, permeability deformation and seepage model laboratory, rock rheology laboratory, physical model laboratory, and geotechnical centrifuge model laboratory, as well as 72 sets of large-scale scientific research instruments and software worth over 500000 yuan。
The goal of the Laboratory is to develop the theory, methods, technology, and equipment of geotechnical engineering. It focuses on the construction of water conservancy and hydropower projects and water disaster prevention, and conducts applied basic research and technical equipment development on key geotechnical scientific and technological issues in the construction and operation of major national infrastructure. It serves the needs of national economic construction and disaster prevention and reduction, and provides technical support for the development of water conservancy technology. The main research directions are geotechnical mechanics theory and testing simulation methods, geotechnical dynamics and engineering blasting technology, geotechnical engineering safety and risk prevention, groundwater resources and geotechnical seepage, environmental geotechnical and ecological restoration technology.
